BCF Senior Vice President R. C. Hammack congratulates Writing Center Director Geraldine DeFelix on five successful years.

During the spring semester of 2009, The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville proudly announced the grand opening of the WRITE Stuff Writing Center. On Monday, January 20, 2014, the WRITE Stuff Writing Center Director and staff celebrated their fifth anniversary with an open house, much like the one that kicked off the inauguration of the center five years ago.

The WRITE Stuff Writing Center was established in order to assist students with their writing skills through tutoring and intense paper reading sessions.  The Writing Center Director Geraldine “Deanie” DeFelix stated that she has seen the center grow tremendously since the early days in 2009. “The first semester we were open, the Writing Center had fewer than 100 students ask for help,” stated DeFelix.  “But with the help of the faculty, the Fall 2013 semester brought more than 300 students to the Writing Center for assistance.”

Initially the Writing Center staff included the director and two student tutors. With the growth that has taken place and the tremendous benefits, there are now four student tutors that assist DeFelix. “We now have a peer tutor for the graduate division, as well as three other tutors for the undergraduate students,” stated DeFelix.

The online presence of the WRITE Stuff Writing Center has also grown over the past five years. In the spring of 2009, the Writing Center had no online requests for writing assistance. This number increased to more than 50 requests during the Fall 2013 semester.

“We look forward to more improvements as we move forward,” DeFelix said. With the growth that has already taken place in the past five years, the WRITE Stuff Writing Center is sure to continue to flourish. The service offered to the students of BCF through this program is invaluable, providing the greatest opportunity to improve upon writing skills, regardless of the current skill level.
