BCF Writing Center Director Deanie DeFelix meets with lead tutors Johnnie-Ann Campbell and Melody Rogers and University of West Florida Writing Lab Tutor Angie Elligson.

As the new semester begins at The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville, exciting new additions have been made to the campus Writing Center. Writing Center Director Deanie DeFelix, and lead tutors, Johnnie-Ann Campbell and Melody Rogers, recently met with Angie Elligson, University of West Florida Writing Lab Tutor and daughter of BCF Missions Professor Rich Elligson, to discuss ways to change and improve the WRITE Stuff lab at BCF.

Angie Elligson has worked closely with UWF Writing Lab Director, Mamie W. Hixon, for two years; in fact, Elligson's connection to Hixon opened the door for DeFelix to visit the UWF lab in December of 2008. Hixon willingly shared her expertise, which is the result of spending the last 25 years in creating and continuously improving the writing lab at UWF.

The UWF lab is the model that DeFelix kept in mind as she set up the BCF lab in January of 2009. Elligson's suggestions to the BCF Writing Center personnel have been invaluable as Director DeFelix and her staff continue efforts to improve and expand the services available, both on campus and online. In addition to the new look in the BCF lab, there will be several changes in policies and procedures, along with the latest updates in the citation guides for Turabian, MLA, and APA writing styles.

According to DeFelix, the Writing Center had 80 visitors during the spring 2009 academic session. Visitors increased to 97 during the fall session and then 297 students seeking writing assistance visited the lab in the spring 2010 session.

DeFelix plans to unveil the latest changes to the lab and introduce new tutors during an open house Friday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. The entire BCF community is invited to attend the event.
