BCF STUDENTS VISIT THE STATE CAPITOL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 13, 2010
In an effort to gain an even greater perspective into the political process, the U.S. Government class from The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) left the Graceville campus on April 20 and made the trip to the State Capitol in Tallahassee to view the state government in action. While there, BCF students spent the day with Bill Bunkley, Legislative Consultant to the Florida Baptist Convention. Bunkley proved to be an excellent resource to the day-to-day inner workings of the legislative process. He related the relevance of the functions of government to college students, and more importantly to Christians as a whole.
As they toured the Capitol buildings, many students were surprised and impressed by the openness of employees and politicians. The Capitol tour began in the chapel, where one of the BCF students led the group in prayer. Later on, the class was not only able to watch the Florida House of Representatives in session from the gallery, but also observe a Senate committee meeting. The class visited with several elected officials, including Rep. Marti Coley, Rep. Brad Drake, Sen. Ronda Storm, and Sen. Stephen Wise. The legislators spoke with the students and were available to answer any questions.
Throughout the visit, Bunkley provided the BCF group with personal stories and commentaries which gave students to better grasp of governmental procedures and maximize their time at the Capitol. A tour of the Historic State Capitol building completed the day.
The students returned to campus with a greater appreciation for the state legislature and men and women who serve in elected office. The class recognized the need to stay informed on political issues, participate in the voting process, and be faithful to pray for the nation and officials.
